Is Handshake AI Legit? What 1,615 Reddit Comments Show

The short version

• Handshake AI is real and it pays. Contributors report being paid reliably and on time, in some cases thousands of dollars over weeks or months: 7 accounts across 7 threads, 2025 to 2026.
• Which project you are matched to decides what you make. Specialist and domain-expert projects pay well above generalist rates: 7 accounts across 5 threads, 2026.
• The wait is the first real cost. Weeks to several months between signing up and a first paid project, and some are never matched at all: 7 accounts across 4 threads, 2026.
• Removal without a clear explanation is the most reported problem, in a number of cases with completed work left unpaid: 11 accounts across 3 threads, 2026.
• Pay disputes run against a record you cannot see. Contributors say they cannot verify how their hours or pay are calculated: 5 accounts across 4 threads, 2026.
• You are an independent contractor, and no tax comes out at source. A W-8 or W-9 at sign-up, a 1099-NEC in the US, and tax money is yours to set aside: 4 accounts across 3 threads, 2026.

What Handshake AI is

Handshake AI is the AI-trainer side of Handshake. Contributors describe the fellowship as having grown out of Handshake's college career-services product, with sign-up sometimes reached through a school email or account, and some report that students are fast-tracked, though the program is open to non-students too (4 accounts across 4 threads, 2025 to 2026).

The work is project-based rather than open. You sign up, verify your identity, and then wait to be matched rather than choosing. Contractor onboarding and payments run through Deel and Stripe, with bank details entered directly into Stripe (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). Access has historically been restricted by country and largely limited to people authorised to work in the US (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026), though contributors report sign-ups and phone verification recently opening to India (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). Contributors in India describe access as invite-only in practice, arriving through LinkedIn messages or third-party recruiters (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2026).

How we checked

We read 38 Reddit threads containing 1,615 comments from 995 different accounts, dating from June 2025 to July 2026. Every claim below had to be stated by at least two different accounts in two different threads before we would print it, and every negative claim about the company by at least five accounts across three threads, quoted rather than paraphrased. Every claim carries the period its evidence comes from.

We deliberately read in two passes. The first covered Handshake AI's own subreddit (25 threads). The second covered 13 threads in subreddits Handshake AI does not moderate, because a company's own forum is not neutral ground.

Where people disagree, we print both sides. Where the evidence is mostly old, we say so instead of presenting it as current. The full method, including what we refuse to print, is on our methodology page.

What Handshake AI says it pays

Forum pay figures cannot be checked, so we do not repeat them. What follows is taken from Handshake AI's own published material, read on 21 October 2026:

• The public opportunities page lists projects as "Up to $17/hr" (its AI Evaluation Specialist listing) and "Up to $80/hr", "Up to $120/hr" and "Up to $125/hr" (domain-expert listings such as FP&A Analyst, Software Engineer and Game Developer), in its "Trending opportunities" section.
• "Get paid hourly for high-impact work, no matter your background."
• Eligibility: "To participate in the Handshake AI Fellowship, you must be based in the U.S. and have a valid work authorization"; "F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible. STEM OPT is not supported."
• The process it describes: apply and verify your identity, get matched to a project, take the training, contribute, get paid. The page states no payment timing.

How the money actually works, and why it matters

There are two pay bands, and which one you land in is most of the story. Generalist AI-training work is reported at the low end (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026), while contributors on specialist or domain-expert projects report rates well above generalist ones (7 accounts across 5 threads, 2026). The platform's own published figures, read 21 October 2026, are up-to rates: $17 per hour on its AI Evaluation Specialist listing, the generalist entry point, and $80, $120 and $125 per hour on domain-expert listings. Those are published ceilings, not earnings.

Payment itself is weekly and runs through Stripe. Contributors describe logging hours on the platform and pay disbursed weekly to a linked Stripe account, deposited into a bank account set up on the payments page (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). Many report a regular weekly schedule, commonly landing on a Wednesday or Thursday (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026).

The paid hour is narrower than the working hour. Time spent on assessments, on moving through the platform between tasks, and on other ancillary steps is reported as unpaid, which lowers the effective rate (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). Per-task time limits are reported as often shorter than the work actually requires (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2025 to 2026). Projects often set weekly hour caps, and hours beyond the cap are reported as unpaid (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). On some pay-per-task projects, contributors describe buying a paid subscription out of pocket that is reimbursed only if a task is accepted through review (5 accounts across 2 threads, 2026).

On whether the full amount arrives, the accounts split, and both sides are substantial. Contributors report being paid reliably and on time, in some cases thousands of dollars over weeks or months (7 accounts across 7 threads, 2025 to 2026). "I always get paid on time and nothing sketchy happens. They are legit." (r/joinhandshakeai, April 2026, https://www.reddit.com/r/joinhandshakeai/comments/1si4lrb/is_applying_worth_it). Against that, contributors report being paid less than they were owed, including hours approved only in part and money deducted from later pay after a removal (8 accounts across 4 threads, 2026), and recorded hours or earnings not matching what they expected (6 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). The counts on each side are of the same order, so neither is a fringe.

The record you would argue from is not one you can see. Contributors describe the activity and time-tracking system as opaque, saying they cannot see or verify how their hours or pay are calculated (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2026). "They are not transparent about pay calculations, so they essentially can claim whatever they want." (r/joinhandshakeai, July 2026, https://www.reddit.com/r/joinhandshakeai/comments/1v2v6e8/this_scared_me_i_thought_i_was_being_off_boarded). Tax is on your side of the line too. Contributors are independent contractors, with a W-8 or W-9 at sign-up and a 1099-NEC in the US, and no tax comes out at source (4 accounts across 3 threads, 2026).

What else people consistently report

Removal is the single most reported problem. Contributors report being removed from projects, offboarded, suspended or banned without a clear explanation, and in a number of cases not being paid for work already completed (11 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). Outside Handshake's own subreddit, the same pattern: accounts suspended or removed with little or no explanation, sometimes shortly after paid work was submitted (8 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). "Never received my bonus. Dropped from projects with no reasonable explanations." (r/joinhandshakeai, January 2026, https://www.reddit.com/r/joinhandshakeai/comments/1q8kcez/what_to_expect_when_working_as_an_ai_trainer_with).

The score that usually triggers removal is thinly sampled. Contributors call the quality-review system subjective and weighted toward negative marks, saying a few low scores from one reviewer can sharply lower an average built from many good reviews (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). "You get one bad QA score from one of these brainless reviewers and your reputation is killed." (r/joinhandshakeai, January 2026). Some were removed for stated quality-score reasons while only a small fraction of their completed tasks had been reviewed (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026).

Getting in takes longer than people expect, and it asks for a lot. Contributors report waiting weeks to several months after signing up, often with no clear timeline, before being matched to a paid project, and some report never being matched at all (7 accounts across 4 threads, 2026); the same long waits appear outside the platform's own subreddit (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2025 to 2026). Verification requires a driver's license or passport and a facial scan, and several said they stopped there (5 accounts across 5 threads, 2025 to 2026). Contributors from India report the phone-verification step has no India country code option, blocking them even after a project invite (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2026). "I am trying to apply but getting stuck at the phone verification process, since there is no option to select India." (r/joinhandshakeai, July 2026, https://www.reddit.com/r/joinhandshakeai/comments/1uwdig5/anyone_from_india_in_the_handshake_ai_fellowship).

Work arrives in bursts, and sometimes not at all. Contributors describe task volume as inconsistent, with some periods offering little or no work even while enrolled in a project, and say generalist projects in particular can be scarce (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2026). Elsewhere it is described as weeks of plentiful tasks followed by weeks with none, a need-based system (3 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). Projects can also end or disappear from the dashboard abruptly, sometimes right after onboarding or an initial task (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2026).

Support is where the other problems come to rest. Contributors report that support responses to payment or account disputes are generic or automated and do not resolve the issue (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2026), and elsewhere describe slow replies, including tickets that took over a week (6 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). "email responses are generic and never actually deal with the issue, and they drag matters out." (r/joinhandshakeai, June 2026). Contributors across several threads describe internal operations as disorganised even when they were ultimately paid (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2025 to 2026). One distinction is worth carrying: contributors separate Handshake AI itself, which they call legitimate, from third-party recruiters approaching people over LinkedIn, whom they consider harder to verify (3 accounts across 2 threads, 2026).

What we could not verify

What any individual actually took home. Forum figures for hourly rates and totals vary by more than an order of magnitude and none of them can be checked, so we do not repeat them. The only rates on this page are the ones the platform publishes itself, and a published rate is not an earnings figure.

Why a particular account was closed, and whether per-task projects are worth taking. Some contributors report a ban or revoked project access citing vague or unverified reasons, such as irregular activity or unproven AI use, without specifics on what rule was broken. Others say pay-per-task projects are much harder to earn from than hourly ones, and that project onboarding is unpaid even though it takes real time. Too few accounts said either for us to print it. We can see the effect people describe. We cannot see the decision behind it, so we leave the conclusion to you.

• Find out which pay band your project sits in before you plan your week around it. Specialist and domain-expert projects pay well above generalist rates (7 accounts across 5 threads, 2026).
• Keep your own record of hours from the first task. Contributors cannot see or verify the platform's tracking (5 accounts across 4 threads, 2026) and report being paid less than they were owed (8 accounts across 4 threads, 2026).
• Treat the identity step as a real decision. It asks for a driver's license or passport and a facial scan, and several contributors stopped there (5 accounts across 5 threads, 2025 to 2026).
• Do not spend your own money on the strength of a promised reimbursement. On some pay-per-task projects, a paid subscription bought out of pocket is reimbursed only if a task is accepted through review (5 accounts across 2 threads, 2026).
• Set tax money aside as you go, and do not make this your only income. You are an independent contractor with no tax taken at source (4 accounts across 3 threads, 2026), and projects can end or vanish from the dashboard without warning (5 accounts across 3 threads, 2026).
