Introduction

Different platforms have different citation format requirements. This module teaches you to adapt quickly while maintaining the core principle: every factual claim must be verifiable.

3.3.1 Common Citation Formats

Format 1: Inline Source Reference

Structure: [Claim] (Source Name, URL)

Example: The Eiffel Tower is 330 meters tall (Britannica, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Eiffel-Tower)

When Used:

  • Most common format
  • Quick verification needed
  • Source directly supports specific fact

Format 2: Footnote Style

Structure: [Claim]^1

^1 Source Name, "Article Title," URL

Example: The Great Wall of China measures approximately 21,196 kilometers^1

^1 UNESCO World Heritage Centre, "The Great Wall," https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/438

When Used:

  • Multiple citations in one response
  • Formal evaluation contexts
  • Keeps main text clean

Format 3: Author-Date

Structure: [Claim] (Author, Year)

Example: Coffee consumption increases alertness (Smith et al., 2023)

When Used:

  • Academic-style platforms
  • Research paper evaluations
  • Scientific content

Note: May require full reference list at end.

Format 4: Direct Quote Citation

Structure: "[Exact quote]" - Source Name, URL

Example: "The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second" - National Institute of Standards and Technology, https://www.nist.gov/pml/owm/si-units-speed-light

When Used:

  • Exact wording matters
  • Technical specifications
  • Legal/policy statements
